The great Austrian songwriter was drawn to Mediterranean culture and in his two-volumes of settings of Italian texts collected and translated by Paul Heyse (1892-6) produced one of his masterpieces. Christian Gerhaher joins with a fellow compatriot who recently switched from soprano to mezzo and who made her Salzburg Festival debut last year as Zerlina in Don Giovanni.
