Toronto filmmaker, Christene Browne, reads from her second novel, Philomena (Unloved), a poignant story about Philomena Jones who, born in the Caribbean and abandoned by her mother, leaves for America only to end up homeless and battling mental illness. Following the reading, Christene will be interviewed by writer Pauline Peters.
Christene Browne is an award-winning filmmaker whose work has been broadcasted and screened internationally. In 1999 Browne became the first Black woman to direct and write a dramatic feature in Canada, Another Planet. In 2011 she was awarded the Visionary award by TheWIFTS Foundation for her ground-breaking documentary series Speaking in Tongues: The History of Language, featuring Noam Chomsky. She is currently completing a feature length documentary and working as a lecturer in the Radio and Television Arts at Ryerson University.
