For our second members' walk for 2024 we’re heading southwest, to the Ōpāwaho Divide section of the Trail, walking from Westlake Reserve to Curletts Basin.
The route begins with a circuit of one of the lakes at Westlake, home to a number of waterfowl. We will then explore the headwaters of the Ōpāwaho / Heathcote River, through Nash Reserve and Ngā Puna Wai (including a visit to the famous Eel Bridge!), before finishing at Curletts Basin, which has become home to an increasing number of native plants and animals since its construction 5 years ago.
Walk arrangements are as follows:
· Date: Sunday, August 4th 2024
· Meet/park: 9.15 am at the far end of Annex Road off Lincoln Road. Here we will organise drivers/vehicles to transport walkers to the starting point at Westlake Reserve.
· Walk starts: 9.45 am.
· Route: Flat walking from Westlake Reserve to Curletts Basin.
· During the walk, Rachel Barker (Ōpāwaho / Heathcote River Network) will talk to us about the features of the upper Ōpāwaho / Heathcote catchment. We’ll learn more about the springs and streams, tuna and other wildlife.
· Duration: 2-2.5 hrs walking (depends on the stopping times)
We anticipate being back at Curletts Basin 11.45 am approximately where we'll arrange shuttles to pick up the vehicles at the start.
