Chris Parker - Drummer & Artist Born in Chicago, Chris was playing drums at age three and began performing his first professional gigs at eleven. At nineteen, Parker began recording and touring with blues great Paul Butterfield and then broke into the New York studio scene in 1970,doing records, movie scores and filling the drum chair at Saturday Night Live.

Toph, as friends know him, recorded platinum, gold and Grammy winning albums and CDs with many artists,including the original Brecker Brothers, Bob Dylan, Cher, Natalie Cole, Donald Fagen, Ashford and Simpson, Aretha Franklin, Freddie Hubbard, James Brown, Salt ‘n’ Pepa, Stuff, Miles Davis, Patti LaBelle, Michael Bolton, Michael Franks, Lionel Hampton,Eddie Palmieri,Gato Barbieri,Ivan Lins,Jane Duboc,Billie Holiday,Tony Bennett,Jon Secada,Don Covay and Quincy Jones who has written liner notes for the latest cd,”Blue Print.”

Currently leading his own band,the Chris Parker Trio with Kyoko Oyobe,piano and Ameen Saleem,bass,Parker has just recorded “Blue Print,” a new cd dedicated to Arif Mardin and produced by Arif’s son, Joe.This new work features Randy Brecker,on three tracks as well as Parker’s original compositions.

Kyoko Oyobe - pianist, composer, arranger The Japanese-born pianist, composer Kyoko Oyobe has been a mainstay in the New York Jazz scene since 2005. She started playing piano at the age of four, At the age of 17 her mother started inviting famous Japanese musicians, such as Terumasa Hino to give concerts at their home. At the age of 19 she was greatly inspired by a live performance of Kensaku Tanikawa and began playing jazz piano. In 2000 she started traveling to New York. She studied under Frank Hewitt, Jean Michel Pilc and Gil Coigns. In October 2005 she moved to New York and it didn’t take long for Kyoko to make her mark. She started performing with her own group at New York CIty’s renowned jazz clubs, such as Smalls Jazz Club and Fat Cat. In December 2008 she made a live recording of her original music with her trio, Michael O’Brien (bass) and Clifford Barbaro (drums) at Smalls Jazz Club that gave birth to the album, “Cookin’ at Smalls” released in 2009. In 2014 she made a recording with her Quartet, Steve Wilson (saxophone), Matt Wilson (drums) and Michael O’Brien (bass). The new album “ Happy Silence” was released in 2015.

She has been performing and composing internationally with such notables as Chris Parker who has been a drummer of Bob Dylan, Miles Davis, Brecker Brothers, Cher, Natalie Cole, Aretha Franklin, Stuff, James Brown, Quincy Jones and many more, (Kyoko has been the piano player of The Chris Parker Trio and they released three records including some of her compositions and arrangements), Tom Harrell, Victor Lewis, Steve Wilson, Matt Wilson, Dave King, Chris Speed, Greg Osby, Gene Jackson, Ben Monder, Randy Brecker, Bill McHenry, Francois Moutin, Clifford Barbaro, Joe Magnarelli, Sophie Alour, Sylvia Cuenca, Troy Roberts, to name a few. She has headlined at many well-known jazz venues in New York, such as the Blue Note, Smalls Jazz Club, Mezzrow, Jazz at Kitano, Garage, 55 Bar, Fat Cat, etc. In Japan, she is also known for touring regularly with her Trio and Quartet at NHK concert hall (Japan’s National public broadcasting organization), Body and Soul (Tokyo), Left Alone (Kobe), Speak Low (Hiroshima), New Combo (Fukuoka), Renaiss Hall (Okayama) and many others. In October 2011, Kyoko had a special three-week French tour in which she was invited to share her music with French female artists throughout many Jazz clubs in Paris. In 2018, her trio with Michael O’Brien and Andrew Atkinson was invited to perform at the Residence of the Ambassador of Japan in Washington D.C.. In 2019, she had a great success performing with her trio featuring Dave King in Minneapolis and with her Quartet with Jon Irabagon, Michael O’Brien and Andrew Atkinson at the Wisconsin Union Theater in Madison. Her prowess as a superlative jazz pianist is recognized internationally by musical peers who regularly invite her to accompany them.

Michael O'Brien - Bass Composer. Educator Michael O'Brien studied bass under Anthony Cox, and West African and Haitian percussion under Marc Anderson. Michael has been performing and composing for over a decade with such notables as Gene Pitney, Dave King, Jeff Kashiwa, Todd Reynolds, Wessel Anderson, David Binney, The Jazz Mandolin Project, Joel Harrison, Marty Haugin, Peter Ostroushko, Christian Howes, John Van Ohlen, Hod O'Brien, Stephanie Nakasian, Dan Weiss, Marc Giuliana, Roseanna Vitro, Daniel Kelly, Marc Anderson, Mary Ellen Childs, Bruce Henry, Laura Caviani, Electropolis, Clay Moore, Daniel Alexander Jones, J. Otis Powell!, Connie Evingson, and Prudence Johnson. His compositions are performed by the acclaimed string quartet Ethel, the Clay Moore trio, the Kelly Rossum Quintet, Electropolis, the April Sellers Dance Collective, and Karen Lyu and Global Jazz. In June of 2004 Michaels' composition "Pine" was premired by Ethel at the International Festival of Arts and Ideas in New Haven, CT. Ethel debuted "Pine" at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C in January of 2005. Michael has been commissioned by the Jazz is Now Orchestra through the Jerome Foundation. He has had compositions recorded on Kelly Rossums' "The Party's Over/Begun" and "Renovation", Electropolis' "More Music for Trips", and Karen Lyu and Global Jazz's "live". In 2004 Michael received the New Mexico Music Industry Award for Best Remake with the group New York Louie and Friends. The Kelly Rossum Quintets cd "Renovation" was voted one of the top ten cds released in 2004 by the City Pages. The Star and Tribune voted it one of the top ten local releases and one of the top twenty overalll releases of 2004. The Kelly Rossum Quintet were also nominated for the best acoustic jazz group, and best jazz recording for the 2004 Minnesota Music Awards. Electropolis was nominated for the category of Best New Artist in the 2003 Minnesota Music Awards. O'Brien's experience includes inter-arts collaborations with The Choreographers Evening in collaboration with Choreographer April Sellers; Three Legged Races' Summer Blizzard in "La Chanteuse Nubiene" collaborating with playwright Daniel Alexander' Jones, the Miami production of "Gershwin the Klezmer"; the Illusion Theater's productions of "Spirit House" and" Another Song About Paris"; composer Mary Ellen Childs' percussion and choreography piece, "Crash", the Zorongo Flamenco dance company, and collaborations with the poet J. Otis Powell! Michael has performed at the IAJE (International Jazz Educators conference), PASIC (Percussive Arts Societies International Convention), American Composers Forums' Sonic Circuits Festival, the Musica Mundi Choir festival and competition, the LaCrosse Jazz Festival, and the Twin Cities' Hot Summer Jazz Festival.


He has appeared in numerous recordings including; "Follow Me Follow my Groove" New York Louie and Friends, "The Partys' Over/Begun" and "Renovation" Kelly Rossum, "More Music for Trips" Electropolis, "Live" Karen Lyu and Global Jazz. Michael has recorded on many radio and television commercials most recently for Northwest Airlines. He has also performed on MPRs' "Prairie Home Companion", the Twin Cities Public Television series "Quarter Notes". Michael O'Brien teaches pnvately at the West Bank School of Music, Water Music, and substitute teaches at Music Tech. Michael teaches ensemble classes at MusicTechs' Summer Workshops, has lectured at the College of St. Mary's, and was Guest Artist-in- Residency with the Minneapolis Public Schools.

If the new date is postponed, a future alternate date will be picked at the discretion of Bethel Jazz and the musical artist. The ticket holder will be notified of postponements, cancelations, and rescheduled dates via email. Tickets are non-refundable and may be transferred to another person in the event a purchaser can not make the rescheduled date. In the event, an artist cancels a date, and Bethel Jazz is unable to reschedule the artist, Bethel Jazz reserves the right to provide a substitute performer of equal quality without notice to the ticket purchaser. If a date is canceled and not rescheduled, Bethel Jazz will provide a refund (in some cases minus the Eventbrite fee) or credit for another performance at the choice of the ticket holder. Bethel Jazz will always do its best to accommodate for changes in seating, table sizes, or changes to tickets.
