One of the greatest compliments a musician can get is that they make “real music”, and that describes songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Chris Altmann’s approach to his craft. A lover of the traditional roots of rock n’ roll and country, he creates music that people connect with viscerally, whether it’s through heels stomping on a barroom floor, or a heart aching from lost love.
Originally from the Adelaide Hills, South Australia, Chris now resides in Hamilton, Ontario. A lifelong desire to master the instruments of the music he loves, Chris started piano at age 5, banjo at 10, and pedal steel at 18. Along his journey he has embraced many musical styles; from country rock group The Drowners, to the more modern pop/rock sound of The Vandas, and onto a solo career steeped in Americana. He is now an in-demand session player, appearing on dozens of recordings, and a touring musician performing with Tim Hicks, Blue Rodeo, Fred Eaglesmith, Tim Rogers, Henry Wagons, Golden Feather, Michelle McAdorey and Ginger St. James, among many others. He has been nominated three times by the Canadian Country Music Association for Pedal Steel Guitar Player of the Year.
In recent years Chris shifted his focus to composing for screen, studying through Berklee College of Music. His songs have been licensed for shows like in Home & Away and Neighbours, and independent films including I’ll Take Your Dead, Beneath, and Vicious Fun. In 2021 he started releasing a series of new singles, challenging listener’s expectations of how a pedal steel guitar can sound.
