Choreographer Biography

Gaitrie Subryan is an esteemed figure in the world of dance. She is the Artistic Director and Choreographer of Devi Performing Arts, based in Buffalo, NY. She boasts a multifaceted career as a Choreographer, Performer, Dance Studio Teacher, and Yoga Instructor. Originating from Guyana, South America, and nurtured in The Bronx, Gaitrie's artistic odyssey is deeply intertwined with Indian dance forms, spanning folk dance, Garba, Kathak, Bharatanatyam, Bhangra, and semi-classical dance. With a rich experience of over 11 years, she has orchestrated many successful shows in Western New York, including her recent production, "Find Your Beat," which premiered at 710 Shea’s. This production, generously supported by Arts Services Inc., NYSCA, and Creatives Rebuild New York, is a testament to Gaitrie's dedication to sharing the vibrant cultural narrative of the Indo-Caribbean people with diverse audiences. Unfaltering in her pursuit of excellence, Gaitrie hones her skills in Kathak, a North Indian Classical Dance, under her Guru, Jayeeta Dutta, a celebrated Kathak artist based in Bangalore, India. She further enriches her repertoire through immersive workshops and classes in various dance forms, including Contemporary, Jazz, Modern, Bharatanatyam, and Folk. Gaitrie's contributions to the arts have been recognized with several prestigious awards and grants, including the "SPARK" award from Art Services Inc., the "IGNITE" Award from the Women’s Business Center at Canisius College, and the Creatives Rebuild New York award. She has also received funding from the Arts Services Initiative, Empire State Create Grant, Danceforce Recipient funded by “Pick of the Crop,” NYC Arts in Education, and NYSCA Grant for new works for 2024. In addition to her achievements in dance, Gaitrie's creative endeavors extend to filmmaking, with her short film "Speak Up, Speak Out," funded by NYSCA, addressing the issue of domestic violence. Premiered in Buffalo in 2023, this poignant film showcases her talent for storytelling and movement. With an unwavering dedication to preserving her cultural heritage and sharing her passion for storytelling through dance, Gaitrie Subryan continues to inspire and uplift audiences worldwide.
