Join us in our demonstration garden, where we will explore how to select and plant the best waterwise plants for your space.
About this Event

Our instructor for this workshop will be Scott Kleinrock, Conservation Programs Manager here at Chino Basin Water Conservation District and the Waterwise Community Center.

Scott has been working in horticulture for almost 20 years, focused on both the design and ongoing care of sustainable native or edible landscapes in Southern California at the residential and public garden scales. He has a master’s degree in landscape architecture for Cal Poly Pomona and was previously the Landscape Design and Planning Coordinator at the Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens.

Success with new landscape plantings requires choosing the right plants for your space, starting with high quality plants, and installing them correctly to get them off to a healthy start. These practices are often underrated and are one of the best ways to protect your investment in your new plants, help them grow quickly, and keep them healthy and resistant to pests and diseases.

In this class we will cover:

• Choosing what to plant in your landscape

• Finding and selecting your plants at local nurseries

• What sizes to buy for different types of plants

• What to look for to select the healthiest plants possible

• Caring for your plants until you can plant them

• Preparing your site for planting

• Best planting practices for different types and sizes of waterwise plants

• How to keep new plantings healthy as they get established

Each participant will be able to select a native wildflower seed packet of their choice to take home.

After the workshop concludes, for those who wish to stay, we will be offering a raffle give-away of some of our favorite waterwise California native plants. We will also tell you a bit about each one, why it is one of our favorites, and the garden situations in which it is likely thrive.
