The flavours and fragrances of winter brought to us by chocolate, cinnamon, bay, cardamom, pepper and vanilla evoke strong memories for us all with traditional family recipes being handed down through generations across all cultures and lands. The use of spices for medicinal purposes is also well-known and openly documented through ancient myths and records; not surprisingly, scientific evidence is accumulating that supports the anecdotal health benefits touted by our ancestors. It is not surprising that the Gardens has its own collection of these familiar yet exotic plants that are surrounded by so much folklore and history.
Mali will take us on a tour of the Gardens to explore these plantings and give us a little history of the spice trade, including the tales of these plants that have added so much spice to our lives, and the stories of their propagation and use.
