The collaboration of an opera singer with a guitarist in a solo performance is in itself a unique event rarely encountered on stage in the classical paradigm. While often seen in more commercial settings, voice with guitar accompaniment is tradition and can be seen in music genres spanning baroque to contemporary Latin music. The guitar, being a solo instrument in its own right, has been described as an orchestra in miniature. For this reason, it can be the ideal complement to a vocal performance rather than being tooloud an instrument to overpower. Programs for voice and guitar are intimate and open up a unique connection with audiences that bigger, louder ensembles could not.
Mezzo-soprano Linette van der Merwe and Jonathan Moolman on guitar joined forces to create a program that will be to everyone’s taste. Chitarra e Canto debuted at this year’s Wakkerstroom Music Festival, and both festival concerts were sold out. Audiences can look forward to a concert with a diverse repertoire ranging from Purcell to Gershwin.
