About this Event
The world is fragmenting and de-globalising. As geopolitics continues to tend towards polarisation, questions of belonging and “homeland” are being questioned and placed under strain.
What do these events mean for the Chinese diasporas in the Americas and Europe? And how do they shape memory, identity, mobility and aspiration from generation to the next? Join experts in conversation to explore how de-globalisation and the “China story” are playing out at the human level – amongst societies, communities, families and individuals.
YCW is delighted to host Prof Evelyn Hu-DeHart.
SPEAKERS
Prof Evelyn Hu-DeHart
Dr Evelyn Hu-DeHart is Professor of History, and Director of the Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America at Brown University.
The goal of Professor Hu-DeHart`s diaspora project is to uncover and recover the history of Asian migration to Latin America and the Caribbean, and to document and analyze the contributions of these immigrants to the formation of Latin/Caribbean societies and cultures. It should also contribute towards theorizing diasporas and transnationalism. The importance and timeliness of this research was most recently demonstrated by the election of Alberto Fujimori, son of Japanese immigrants, as president of Peru. Hu-DeHart also hopes that her work will broaden the scope of Asian American studies as well as contribute to an area not well covered within Latin American studies.
She has taught and lectured in universities and research institutes across the United States, Mexico, Peru, Cuba, France, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Mainland China.
