About this Event
Join artist Jing Wang for a peaceful and inspiring day exploring the timeless beauty of Chinese brush calligraphy strokes and ink painting.
Location: 19a Hollingdean Terrace
Join artist Jing Wang for a peaceful and inspiring day exploring one of the most cherished flowers in Chinese art — the Chrysanthemum, one of the “Four Gentlemen” (梅兰竹菊) in traditional Chinese painting, symbol of longevity, resilience, grace, and tranquility in the golden season of autumn.
Guided by Jing, you’ll learn the foundational brushstroke techniques and traditional ink methods used in classical Chinese painting. Studying works by Ming dynasty masters Bada Shanren (八大山人) and Chen Chun (陈淳), you’ll discover how to express the spirit and strength of Chrysanthemums through dynamic and expressive brushwork.
You’ll be introduced to:
🌸 Ink line drawing (線描) and mogu (沒骨) boneless techniques for painting the flowers
🌿 Freehand brushstroke (寫意) techniques for painting leaves — skills you can later apply to peonies, roses, and many other plants
With step-by-step guidance and examples suitable for all experience levels, you’ll complete at least two beautiful paintings to take home — perfect to keep or to gift as a meaningful Christmas present.
Enjoy a warm Chinese lunch, tea, and snacks, and relax by the wood burner as you paint — a truly cosy and creative way to spend your autumn Sunday.
