Come on down to our Winter Solstice Festival - our final event for the year!

WHEN: Saturday December 14 2024 1:00PM to 4:00PM

WHERE: Chinatown Plaza Mall - 106 Keefer Street

While the season gets colder celebrate Winter Solstice/Dongzhi Festival with the warmth of the community!

Come join us for a day of arts & culture music food workshops thrift and shopping!

We will have Kirin Rising opening our event with a performance and later hosting a dance garden for you to learn some moves! Kirin Rising is the only active Hakka youth-led kirin dance group in Canada! Come out to watch support and learn from Hakka youth dedicated to preserving their culture and creating strong community bonds.

We’ll be setting up our mahjong tables again with community friend and mahjong expert Chantal available to teach you how to play! Come play a round or two with your friends our seniors and the Chinatown community!

Go够Studio will be back again helping us run another pipecleaner knot-tying workshop! This workshop is great for all ages and for family to do together! Make a Chinese knot with pipecleaners to decorate your home for the Winter Solstice! Go够Studio is a screen printing project prioritizing slow production collaboration and accessible art. It is run by Tajliya Jamal who loves printed matter comics and book forms. To learn more you can find them on instagram at @gogoustudio and @tajliyaj !

Our community friend Harsh will be back with vinyl tunes playing throughout the whole event so you can enjoy an amazingly curated playlist while you enjoy checking out the festivities!

William’s Library - our community sharing initiative in honour of poet and activist William Lim will be open at the event with newly updated items. Peruse through the unique books CDs and many other items available and find something special to take home. We encourage monetary donations (optional) to William’s Library with all proceeds going to @Yarrow Society and their intergenerational work with the Chinatown senior community.

Shop with our friends from the community! Get your own personalized tarot card readings from Ariel and look into some lucky and meaningful jade and gemstone jewelry from Stellar.Moments.111 ! We recommend bringing some cash if you’d like to support our two community vendors. :) Stellar.Moments.111 also accepts card payments.

Head on over to our snack table where we’ll be dishing out our usual buns from Zhao Ma Bakery hot tea and some bonus snacks to celebrate the Dongzhi Festival/Winter Solstice! As always we keep our snacks and tea free for the community as no one should be turned away from community events due to lack of funds.

Event Amenities:

Snacks and beverages will be provided courtesy of Chinatown Together throughout the event.

To ensure inclusivity interpretation for instructions will be available in English Cantonese and Mandarin.

Things to bring:

- Water to stay hydrated

- Comfortable clothing for dancing

- A bag if you plan to take home items from William’s Library

In the face of ongoing gentrification it's crucial for us to unite in support of our Chinatown and DTES communities honor our elders and their cultural heritage and revel in the collective joy of artistic expression.

Through each Chinatown Together event we are dedicated to backing grassroots efforts amplifying the genuine voices of our community reclaiming our cultural roots and safe spaces and standing firmly united against encroaching gentrification. Celebrating community joy is our most powerful resistance to these forces - let's come together and celebrate in Chinatown as one!
