On January 31 and February 1, 2025, the historic El Presidio grounds will transform into a breathtaking celebration of Santa Barbara’s rich cultural heritage with "Chinatown Remembered: A Celebration of Santa Barbara’s Chinatown". This two-night event is a free, family-friendly experience that honors the traditions of the Chinese New Year while shedding light on the vibrant yet overlooked history of Santa Barbara’s Chinatown.This event features an immersive projection installation that brings to life the stories, culture, and community spirit of the Chinatown that existed before the earthquake of 1925. Adding to the festivities, the Camarillo Kung Fu and Lion Dance association will kick off both evenings with a special performance. This event is produced by the Santa Barbara Asian American/Pacific Islander Solidarity Network (SBAAPISN) with co-producers and creative directors The Environment Makers, in partnership with the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation.
Guests can explore the installation from 6:30 PM to 10:00 PM at the El Presidio grounds, where history and modern artistry collide in a meaningful tribute to Lunar New Year traditions and the enduring legacy of Asian American communities in Santa Barbara.
This event is made possible through the collaboration and support of local artists, historians, and community organizations committed to promoting inclusivity and understanding.
