Children of the Revolution | Hijos de la Revolución: Miami Art Week Preview
In Havana, the spirit of the Revolution endures amidst the challenges of scarcity and the effects of the long-standing Embargo. Despite crumbling infrastructure, life pulses with resilience as generations navigate a landscape marked by memories of a bygone era and the realities of daily existence.
The exhibition "Children of the Revolution / Hijos de la Revolución" features evocative images by Marice Cohn Band and is curated by Carl-Philippe Juste. The photographs, spanning from the late Soviet era to 2019, capture the lives of children in Cuba. They reveal moments of innocence that stand in stark contrast to the backdrop of ideological indoctrination - schoolchildren standing proudly alongside portraits of Che Guevara, reflecting both hope and disillusionment, creating a poignant narrative.
Through the collection, viewers are immersed in the everyday lives of Havana's youth, portraying their laughter, secrets, and play against the shadow of a revolution that often fell short of its promises. The exhibit resonates with the words of José Martí, who emphasized the importance of nurturing children as the true hope for the future.
Children of the Revolution, and its images echo the sentiment of José Martí, a key figure in Cuban history and literature. In 1889, he wrote on the cover of the first issue of his magazine La Edad de Oro (The Golden Age), dedicated to the children of Cuba and Latin America: "It is for children that we work, because children are the ones who know how to love, because children are the hope of the world". His words serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of nurturing the younger generation.
Join us for a sneak preview of this groundbreaking exhibition Children of the Revolution as we re-examine Cuba through the its youngest eyes.
