Painting with paper? Well, not quite. Discover the fine art of Chigiri-e — Japanese Collage with artist/instructor Leanne Lai!
About this Event

Chigiri-e is a traditional Japanese art form in which hand-dyed washi (Japanese paper) carefully torn and arranged to create an image. The picture is composed arranging different shapes and sizes of dyed washi. Beautiful effects will be discovered by layering the semi-translucent papers. The results appear similar to a watercolour or oil painting, but it is all paper no paint at all.

Leanne will introduce the various dyed washi that you will be using before going on to teach special techniques and tips to take you from pieces of paper to completed image. Two pictures will be provided, by Leanne, for participants to choose from at the start of the class.

Participants are asked to bring:

  • a notebook and pen for note taking
  • an apron or art-making clothing
  • your lunch!

Participants will break for lunch mid-day. There is a fridge and some small appliance available for your use.

Leanne is an artist and musician from Taiwan. She graduated with a performance diploma in piano from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. She has a love for handmade paper and making beautiful things with it. She has made handmade books and cards with handmade paper from many Asian countries. Her books were sold at the Suho Memorial Paper Museum in Taipei.

Leanne started learning to use Japanese hand-dyed paper (washi) to make pictures about 23 years ago in a Japanese art form called Chigiri-e, studying under several masters in Taiwan. She has had several well-received exhibitions of these pictures in Kaohsiung, Taiwan and the Vancouver area, including the Harmony Arts Festival Exhibition in 2018, 2019 and 2022. You can see some of her art at https://www.facebook.com/papernpaper/. She teaches chigiri-e at various places including Van Dusen Botanical Gardens.
