About this Event
It seems that every day, there’s a news story about air rage – a passenger insulting, abusing, or assaulting a flight attendant or member of the flight crew aboard the plane, or doing the same to customer service personnel and service/concessions workers on the ground.
A recent survey from AFA-CWA found that 85 percent of flight attendants dealt with unruly passengers and nearly 1 in 5 experienced physical incidents since the start of the year. Customer service agents and those who come into contact with the traveling public are also taking a lot of abuse.
As working people, we just want to go to work, do the job to earn our pay, and then go back home to our families at the end of the day. We don’t expect to be abused, threatened or physically attacked for doing our jobs. In response to the pandemic of air rage, the Chicago Federation of Labor Airport Labor Committee (ALC) invites you to an Air Rage Townhall at the Hilton Chicago O’Hare Airport. The event will feature comments from local union leadership, rank-and-file members, elected officials and leaders in aviation.
An injury to one worker is an injury to all.
About the Airport Labor Committee:
The ALC was formed in 2019 shortly after the Federal Government Shutdown. The 2018-2019 Government Shutdown’s disruption of air travel was the tipping point that led to an end to the budget impasse and the reopening of the government. Union density is strong at both O’Hare and Midway Airports. The traveling public comes into contact with hundreds of union members as they pass through the terminals, walk to their gates, and board their planes. Beyond the terminals, Building Trades members are making improvements around the airports. Public sector union members work tirelessly on the operation of the airport and the movement of planes and equipment on the ground and in the air. Unions make Chicago Fly!
The ALC has become a space to build solidarity among the affiliates at Chicago’s Airports. It’s a table to raise awareness of the contract fights, mobilizing drives, member relief efforts, and collaboration on organizing. It’s also a forum to discuss state and local public policy and legislation that can lift up airport workers. The ALC meets quarterly and develops programs throughout the year to support affiliates and union members at the airports. In response to the impact of COVID 19 on union members in the past year, the ALC held food drives at both O’Hare and Midway to help furloughed union members.
