Soul Reflection is a deeply personal exploration of how photographer Cheriss May found her voice through the transformative power of storytelling. This project is not just an exhibition of images; it is an introspective journey into the visual representations of humanity, celebrating one woman‘s path to self-discovery. Through her lens, Cheriss creates moments that reflect the soul’s complexity, using the metaphor of flowers—particularly hydrangeas—as a symbol for growth and change. Just as the color of hydrangeas is shaped by the pH level of the soil, our light, brilliance, and growth are shaped by the environment we cultivate around us.
Soul Reflection unfolds across three significant stages, each representing a pivotal moment in Cheriss‘s journey:
Unseen – A time of profound uncertainty, where feelings of shyness, fear, and confusion clouded her path. It was a period of quiet introspection, as Cheriss grappled with her inner self and the world around her.
Emerging – The moment when photography became not just a medium, but a voice. It was a period of self-discovery, marked by the forging of new connections with others and an awakening to her own inner strength. This stage represents forward momentum, growth, and the ongoing search for deeper purpose.
Ascending – A state of fulfillment, where Cheriss fully embraced the power of her voice through her work. She now knows her worth and her story, and is prepared to engage with her community as a storyteller with purpose and conviction.
