Agenda
Week 1 - Kitchen Basics & Smart Budgeting
Info: teens will learn the fundamentals of cooking and managing a food budget. This session covers essential kitchen tools, knife safety, and food handling, helping participants build confidence in the kitchen. They’ll also explore smart budgeting techniques, such as meal planning, reducing food waste, and making the most of their grocery money.
Week 2 - Understanding Ingredients and International Cuisine
Info: students will discover how to shop wisely by reading labels, comparing prices, and selecting nutritious, cost-effective ingredients. They’ll learn how to make the most of their grocery trips by choosing versatile ingredients, understanding portion sizes, and taking advantage of seasonal and bulk purchasing to save money.
Week 3 - Cooking Techniques & Meal Stretching
Info: participants will put their skills to the test by learning practical cooking methods such as boiling, sautéing, and roasting. This session focuses on maximizing ingredients to create multiple meals, repurposing leftovers, and using creative strategies to make food last longer. Teens will gain hands-on experience making delicious, budget-friendly dishes while developing confidence in the kitchen.
Week 4 - Budget Cooking Challenge & Graduation
Info: where students will apply everything they’ve learned in a fun, team-based cooking competition. Given a budget and a set of ingredients, they’ll create a meal that showcases their creativity and smart shopping skills. The challenge will conclude with a taste test, a celebration of their progress, and a graduation ceremony where participants receive certificates and recognition for their achievements.
