Cheese Wraps and Blueberries explores the disconnect between the idealised image of motherhood portrayed in society and the messy, unpredictable, chaotic reality. Charlotte's struggle to meet expectations set by parenting books, experts, and even other mothers. Revealing pressures to conform to certain standards of parenting, lead to feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt.This new work dives deeper into challenges and frustrations of parenting, the impact of unsolicited advice, the overwhelming weight of responsibility, along with the conflict between social expectations and individual experience. This all hinges on the unrealistic ideal of perfection.
Despite the challenges and frustrations Charlotte faces, she ultimately celebrates the profound joy that comes with being a mother. Charlotte's description of the bond she shares with her children, her willingness to sacrifice for them, and her ability to find wonder in their everyday experiences demonstrate the emotional rewards of motherhood.
All anecdotes are based on true scenarios the writer and performer has encountered with her own young children. Nikkie uses and draws on real life experiences within her relationships, which she explores further in her writing. She loves to look at all angles of a person’s character, exploring how past experiences can shape how we react to others.
Performed and written by Nikkie Karki. Directed by Donna Chapman. Photos by Tereasa Flowers.
