CHEAT MEAL (ft. Thys - Salemi - Odone) - jazz groove (BE)“These well-known gents from the Jazz scene show their true love for groove and funky music. Standing still won’t be an option.”
Brussels-born saxophonist Toine Thys is a central figure on the Belgian scene. Renowned for his intensity and his ability to surprise, he multiplies bold projects, often performing where least expected. Trained in the jazz tradition (New York and the Netherlands), he constantly pushes the boundaries of his comfort zone through unexpected musical encounters, from Africa to Korean percussion. His adventures have led him to conduct a brass band at the bottom of a mine in Congo, amplify tightrope walkers over a lake, and teach in a slum in Kenya.
Martin Salemi is a pianist, keyboardist, and composer based in Brussels, with more than twenty-five albums to his name as a leader and sideman. An eclectic and lyrical musician, he has been praised as “a fine example of what jazz can be today” (Musiq3). His debut trio album, Short Stories (Igloo Records, 2017), was critically acclaimed and earned him the B-Jazz International Contest the following year. About Time (2021) confirmed his place among the major voices of Belgian jazz, hailed as “an instant classic” (RTBF) and awarded four stars by Jazz Magazine.
Umberto Odone is an Italian jazz drummer who has been living in Brussels since 2018. After graduating with top marks in jazz drumming, he has consistently focused on performing and teaching. Over the years, he has played at numerous jazz festivals across Europe. Among his collaborations, he has shared the stage with artists such as John Surman, Philip Catherine, and Stéphane Belmondo.
