Cheap Trick, celebrating their 50th anniversary, remains a key rock institution with their iconic blend of witty lyrics, pop hooks, and sharp riffs. Formed in 1974 by Robin Zander, Rick Nielsen, Tom Petersson, and Bun E. Carlos, the band has earned over 40 Gold and Platinum certifications, with total sales exceeding 20 million records. Hits like “Surrender,” “I Want You to Want Me,” and “The Flame” helped establish their lasting influence. Cheap Trick’s live album Cheap Trick at Budokan became a landmark, reaching #4 on the Billboard 200 and earning 3x Platinum certification.
Their sound evolved with albums like Dream Police and Lap of Luxury, but they continued to innovate into the '90s and 2000s, with tributes from bands like Nirvana and Weezer. In 2016, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Despite lineup changes, including the 2010 addition of drummer Daxx Nielsen, Cheap Trick's energy remains strong, performing over 150 shows annually. Their 2021 album In Another World debuted in the top 10, proving their ongoing relevance as they prepare for more music and a 50th-anniversary tour.
“I don’t ever see us quitting,” Robin Zander says. “We’re not cut out for sitting around and watching TV.”
“This is what we do,” says Tom Petersson. “We’re very proud of our music, we have no problem going around the world playing these songs. That’s what we do.”
