The purpose of this initiative is to generate funds for critical suicide prevention efforts, reduce stigma surrounding suicide and its underlying causes, encourage those experiencing mental illness to seek help, and express solidarity with the families and friends affected by this issue—49,000 Americans lose their lives to suicide annually, and 21 million people experience depression each year.
On February 22, 2022, I faced a personal mental health crisis that resulted in hospitalization and subsequent recovery. While such topics are seldom discussed openly, they have had a profound impact on my life. Losing my cousin Cameron to suicide twelve years ago continues to influence me deeply and serves as a catalyst for organizing this event. My goal is to honor those lost and support ongoing research, education, survivor outreach, and awareness programs relating to suicide prevention.
I will be joining thousands of individuals committed to spreading the message that every life matters. Through my involvement with American Foundation for Suicide Prevemtion, I hope to foster open conversations about suicide and mental health, especially among those who may not have had such discussions growing up. By raising awareness and supporting vital programs, I aim to contribute to the prevention of these tragedies in other families.
