Built between 1607 and 1612, Charlton House was likely intended as the primary residence of Henry, Prince of Wales, the eldest son of James I. The House’s story begins with tragedy: the young prince died before the House’s completion and never set foot inside.
Features like the Prince’s crest embossed in the ceiling, and a fireplace built in geometric patterns to assist with the future king’s studies, are eerie reminders of the long shadow the Prince’s death cast over the House. The 400 years that follow are unsettled – even cursed. One of the first residents, Lady Katherine Puckering, died prematurely.
A child’s skeleton was found in one of the chimneys, thought to be a young sweep who was trapped with no one to hear his cries. England’s only prime minister to be assassinated, Sir Spencer Perceval, lived and worked here. First World War veterans fought for their lives and their minds under the watchful eyes of nurses, and some lost.
With such darkness in its history, it’s no surprise that Charlton House is thought to be one of the most haunted buildings in the U.K. Rooms get unseasonably cold. Heavy doors slam and lock with no explanation. People walking alone feel followed and are touched and grabbed. Investigators have explored the labyrinth-like unfinished basement and have claimed to find unfriendly spirits there. Some go further and say it’s a demon.
