On December 13th at 1 PM, Westside Blues & Jazz will host a special benefit concert for pianist Charlie Smith. Recently, Charlie was the victim of a random, unprovoked assault outside a grocery store, resulting in significant dental injury and the loss of several front teeth. While treatment has begun, the restorative work comes with ongoing and future costs. Charlie’s friends and musical community have come together to help him recover comfortably and maintain stability during this period.
This concert—organized by his friend, James Robertson, is both a fundraiser and a chance to hear Charlie do what he does best. The program will feature blues, jazz, and the genre-blurring spontaneity Charlie is known for: re-imagined standards, groove-driven sets, and shifting small-ensemble combinations throughout the afternoon. Expect everything from intimate piano features to high-energy collaborations with guest musicians.
It’s an afternoon built around music, community, and support—offering audiences a chance to enjoy an artist whose creativity and generosity have shaped so many performances in Phoenix.
The lineup of bands and artists includes:
The Charlie Smith Jazz Trio
Cadillac Assembly Line
Aaron McCall
True Flavor Blues
