In a unique collaboration, Tacoma Art Museum is teaming up with indie book publisher Minor Matters to present Charles Peterson's Nirvana: On Photography and Performance, opening on October 5 and running through May 2025. This exhibition highlights the dynamic energy of Peterson’s black-and-white photographs, now synonymous with the sounds, styles, movement, and attitude known as “grunge.”Curated by Michelle Dunn Marsh of Minor Matters, the exhibition merges a selection of Peterson’s gelatin-silver and pigment prints with photographs, sculpture, and video by six artists including Sylvia Plachy, Nicholas Galanin, Jeffry Mitchell, and Paul Berger -Peterson’s photography professor and co-founder of the University of Washington's Photography program - among others to draw out visual and contextual nuances of Peterson’s photographs.
Don't miss opening night, October 4 at 6 pm, beginning with a member-exclusive event and ending with an unforgettable tour of the exhibition. This event is FREE for members and $20 for non-members.
And join us opening day, Saturday, October 5 at 10:00 am, for a full day of programming in celebration of this iconic work.
