About this Event

In the Gallery Lounge on Vault's elegant 1st floor, the classic Charles Owens Trio featuring the great DJ Harrison on the drums and Andrew Randazzo on hybrid guitar will perform a special concert featuring the music of their 2023 release “Here It Is”. There was never a show celebrating the release of this album and the trio hasn’t performed it live since recording in March 2023. This will be a truly rare show.

Charles Owens is an internationally acclaimed master tenor saxophonist, composer, band leader, recording artist, and educator and has been performing, composing, and teaching for over 35 years. After attending the New School and working as a musician in New York City from 1992 to 2004, he is currently living in Richmond, VA. Charles is an integral part of the vibrant music scene there and in Charlottesville, VA. He also travels back to New York several times a year to perform at venues such as Smoke Jazz Club, Smalls, The Django, and others. with his trio. He has made 13 albums as a leader and appeared and continues to appear on a plethora of recordings as a hired soloist. He's performed with such jazz luminaries as Brad Mehldau, Mark Turner, Omer Avital, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Brian Blade, Peter Bernstein, Ari Hoenig, Alexander Claffy, Jeff Watts, and Joel Frahm among many others. He has devoted his life to pursuing excellence in music and bringing peace and happiness to his fellow humans with his saxophone playing, piano playing, performing, and composing.

DJ Harrison is a 2 x Grammy nominated artist, producer, and multi-instrumentalist. He has released several albums as a solo artist including two on Stones Throw, Tales from the Old Dominion and HazyMoods, and in February 2024, he will release Shades of Yesterday, a new album of cover versions made up of the deep cuts and beloved hits that make the artist who he is today. The record pays homage to Harrison’s musical heroes, looks back to his upbringing in Richmond, VA, and nods to the influence of his contemporaries.

Harrison is not only known for his work as a solo artist. He has created a vast catalog of compositions under his producer moniker, including with Phonte, Steve Arrington, Pink Siifu and Joyce Wrice. He has also contributed to music for artists such as Jack White, Natalie Prass, Sherman Holmes, and Kurt Elling – winning two Grammy nominations for his work on Elling’s most recent albums – and he is a member of the band Butcher Brown, a “garage punk jazz funk” group who recently released a new album, Solar Music.

Andrew Randazzo is a passionate musician whose love for music transcends genres and roles. Based in Richmond, VA, he is a versatile freelance bassist, adjunct professor of bass at Virginia Commonwealth University, and an integral member of the soul fusion quintet, Butcher Brown. Randazzo's musical essence lies in crafting infectious grooves that honor tradition while pushing the boundaries of contemporary music. Randazzo's love of music began as a toddler in Atlanta, GA, listening to cassette tapes on his Walkman everyday. At just 4 years old, his family moved to the Washington, DC area where he began to study music. He started on the piano and cello and also took up singing in choirs in church and at school. At 14, he found his calling with the bass guitar, forging a unique musical voice that would guide his career. A graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University's school of music with a degree in Jazz Double Bass, Randazzo further honed his craft through countless gigs as well as the prestigious Betty Carter Jazz Ahead program in Washington, DC. Joining Butcher Brown after college marked a significant milestone for Randazzo. His induction to the band was recording with trumpet virtuoso Nicholas Payton for his 2014 album "Numbers". Since then he has continued to be a full time member of the band, contributing to 8 full length albums and hundreds of shows spanning the globe. Since 2017, Randazzo has spearheaded the R4ND4ZZO BIGB4ND, Richmond’s premier modern big band ensemble. His prolific creativity shines through an impressive repertoire of original arrangements, spanning jazz, rock, soul, RnB, and hip hop. The BIGB4ND's contributions can be heard on notable releases such as Butcher Brown’s “Triple Trey” and Charles Owens’ “Three and Thirteen”.
