Charity Ball As many of you know, in February 2022 Stuart was diagnosed with a Chondrosarcoma in his right femur. A Chondrosarcoma is a rare primary bone cancer. Due to the complexity of his diagnosis, Stuart had to be treated in the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham. On the 21st March 2024, (a year to the charity evening we are arranging), Stuart had major surgery in Birmingham whereby a shark bite excision was carried out to remove the sarcoma which had wrapped itself around Stuarts’ femur. This meant that he was left with only 10mm of his original femur and in its place, had a human bone donor from California. Stuart was very active prior to his surgery and was in fact training for the Ironman. However, whilst the bone is trying to heal, is it envisaged that Stuart will be on crutches for up to 18 months. During the first 3 months he was non weight bearing, which was very difficult for such an active man especially with two young children (4 years old and 10 months at the time). Stuart is now 8 months on from the surgery and Stuart has received brilliant physiotherapy in both Birmingham hospital and Carmarthen hospital and is doing fantastic. We have this month attended Birmingham for a review, and the surgeon has advised that he can wean himself down to one crutch pending a further review in January 2025. By trade, Stuart is a carpenter and has been unable to work during this time.
During this difficult period, we have however received support from two local charities, these being the Sir Gareth Edwards Trust and The Osborne Trust. I have attached links below to both charities for a further insight.
We are currently arranging a Charity Ball to raise money for the charities who have helped us in our time of need but also continue to help thousands of others.
Follow this event as further details are to follow.
If anyone knows of anyone or businesses that are able to support and that can provide a prize for our silent auction/ raffle on the night would be greatly appreciated. All participating donors/ sponsors will receive a personal mention on the night and will feature on the programme for the evening.
Any funds that are raised will be shared equally between both the Sir Gareth Edwards Trust and The Osborne Trust to allow them to carry on providing the generous work that they do.
