This course offers a comprehensive exploration of expressive portrait drawing, grounded in both traditional academic practices and contemporary artistic expression. Whether you're starting your artistic journey or looking to expand your creative voice, this course will reaffirm foundational figurative drawing skills while providing the space and freedom to master your own expressive mark-making.
We will cover:
- Light Effect & Shadow
- Form Modeling
- Structural Analysis of the head and facial features
- Line Confidence & Composition
Learn to tune into your body, trust yourself, and discover the beauty of your unrepeatable line.
LOCATION: This class will be held at the UTILITY WORKS makerspace in downtown Lansdowne, PA.
Materials Needed:
- Red, White and Blue Chalk pencils
- 2 pieces of Strathmore Artagain Drawing Paper - 19" x 25", Moonstone
- Strathmore 400 Series Recycled Toned Sketch Pad - 11" x 14", 24 Sheets,
Cool Gray
- Fixative spray
- Blending tools (tortillons, blending stumps, or soft cloth)
- Erasers (kneaded and vinyl)
- Exacto knife and fine grit sandpaper for sharpening
Optional: Various inks and White paper for toning
Who is this course designed for?
This course is designed for artists of any experience level:
- Beginners: Learn the fundamentals of charcoal medium, visual mark-making, and creating compelling figure drawings without a focus on anatomical detail.
- Advanced Artists: Push boundaries by shifting from tight, controlled drawing to a more expressive and loose style
Course Objectives:
1. Study Traditional and Contemporary Masterworks: Analyze works from both academic and contemporary traditions to understand material handling and expressive techniques.
2. Learn Foundational Drawing Techniques: Master the basics of tonal scales, shading, and form turning through practical exercises.
3. Develop Personal Artistic Voice: Experiment with visual marks, line quality, and texture, informed by traditional studies and personal expression.
