„UNLOCKING THE CERVICAL SPINE“ with Kathy Berglund (USA).
Do you know the difference between upper and lower cervical spine symptoms? How dysfunctional upper cervical spine biomechanics influences lower cervical spine injuries and painful dysfunctions?
This hybrid course will highlight the anatomy, biomechanics and neurology of the upper and lower cervical spine and the intraregional interdependence of the two areas.
You will learn how to skillfully assess and treat both areas with manual techniques including safe mobilizations and manipulations of both areas. In addition, dry needling techniques for each area will be taught and practiced.
During the course we will also solve many case studies related to cervical spine problems.
Face-to face Course timetable:
Day 1 June 7
Q and A from online part. Case studies for differential diagnosis. Practicing upper and lower cervical scanning exam. Biomechanical examination for ligament stress testing (upper cervical). ROM exam for the upper cervical spine with PIVM testing.
Day 2 June 8
Lower cervical spin PIVM´s. Mobilization techniques for upper and lower cervical spine. Linear manipulations for lower cervical spine. Rehab strategies examples.
Day 3 June 9
Practical Trigger point dry needling for upper and lower cervical spine muscles.
-----
Pre-course online lectures:
Video lecture A – cervical spine problems
In order to understand the types of injuries sustained by the upper and lower cervical, the clinician must have a great understanding and visualization of the anatomy of both the upper and lower cervical spine. The first lectures will review this and point out the clinically relevant features.
Video lecture B - Anatomy
Once the anatomy is understood, it is essential for the clinician to be able to relate the biomechanics of these areas to the anatomy. A working knowledge of the biomechanics of these areas allows the clinician to understand the various tests to these areas. Leading to a correct working diagnosis of biomechanical faults and the intricate relationship between the upper and lower cervical spine. The second lecture will focus on this!
Lecture notes C - neuroanatomy
Neuroanatomy of the upper and lower cervical spine. The upper cervical spine is primarily innervated by the trigeminal nerve which gives rise to a whole host of often bizarre symptoms. This is in stark contrast to the lower cervical spine which gives rise to distinctly different symptoms. The third lecture will explore the differences and the associated clinical relevance.
Lecture notes D - pathologies
Common pathologies of the cervical spine. Reviewed in lecture format, various pathologies will be presented. The pre course assignment for this section will have the learner creating essential illness scripts for the pathologies.
Video Lecture E – scanning exam
Upper and lower cervical scanning exams.
Demonstrated on video, the learner will see how to perform a consistent scanning exam for both areas. These will also be practiced again during in “in person” course.
Lecture F – stability testing
Upper Cervical ligament testing along with vertebral artery testing
Ruling out red flags is essential. Demonstration of testing the AO and AA joint ligaments to ensure safety in physiotherapy practice.
Lecture G - PAIVMS
Introduction to passive intervertebral motion testing of the upper and lower cervical spine.
Lecture H - Muscles and referred pain patterns in the spine.
Lecture I - Principles of treatment for the cervical spine.
