About this Event
Certified Training for Advanced Color Science
Join us for ARRI’s 3-day Certified Training in Advanced Color Science. Designed for cinematographers, colorists, and postproduction professionals, this course dives into the interaction of light, color, perception and cameras in motion imaging. You’ll explore key aspects like color workflows, HDR displays, and digital camera characteristics, with practical sessions on spectroradiometry and LUTs. Gain the skills to manage and troubleshoot color workflows confidently.
The training covers the aspects of color science most relevant to motion imaging. You will gain a deeper understanding of the possible interactions of light, illuminated objects, and camera systems. Our Image Science Engineer will detail the many possibilities for image processing both in camera and in postproduction. By the end of these three days, you will be able to work with a spectrometer, calibrate monitors, and understand color spaces and processing well enough to determine whether a proposed color workflow is self-consistent; to document the interfaces between components in the workflow so that others can integrate their contributions; and to diagnose common imaging workflow problems, be they on-set, in a grading theater, or somewhere in-between.
Who should attend
- Cinematographers
- Colorists
- DITs
- Postproduction/Virtual Production Supervisors
- Technical directors and engineers in postproduction
What you will learn
- Fundamental characteristics of light and color
- Characteristics of displays
- Color appearance and color gamut
- High dynamic range (HDR) displays
- Characteristics of digital cameras
- Hands-on excercises with cameras and lighting products
Details
You will be provided with a detailed introduction to fundamental characteristics of light and displays as well as spectral power distribution, correlated color temperature, metamerism, CIE and RGB color spaces. Each participant will compare how the camera renders colors of objects under different light sources; you will make measurments with a spectrometer in order to become familiar with those instruments and calibrate monitors for different postproduction workflows, experimenting with the application of different LUTs to suit individual setups.
A maximum of 16 participants can attend each course, to ensure that everyone gets sufficiently practical experience of working with the the different tools. There will also be an illuminated set for the hands-on exercises.
