About this Event
Discover the art of ceramics in our workshop led by the talented Koen van Loon. Whether you're a beginner or have some experience, we'll take you through the basics of clay handling all the way to advanced ceramic techniques.
During the first workshop, you will get acquainted with clay and we will start working with hand-building techniques and using small tools to add details.
In the second workshop, the focus will be on the 'slab building' method, where slabs of clay are joined together to create the form.
The third workshop delves into textures in the clay, allowing you to further apply the knowledge from the previous workshops.
The focus during the workshops is on fun and discovery, not on the end result. Itβs a perfect opportunity to take a break from having to perform and to relax with your hands in the clay!
About The Maker and Instructor :
Hey! My name is Koen and I make ceramics, which are objects made of clay and fired in an oven (kiln).
Why did I start with ceramics? When studying at the Willem de Kooning Academy I stumbled upon the ceramics workshop and gave it a try. This is where I learned a variety of possibilities, and there are many! Getting to know the material, finding that clay has a will of its own, attracted me. Especially working with plaster moulds, which allows me to create very clean designs. Because the clay has its own will, you can never fully control the end result. A series of cups that are initially the same, will come out of the kiln as unique individual cups, altered by a combination of heat and time.
What do I hope to achieve with my work? What is my vision? With the playful element in my work, I hope to encourage people to look at their surroundings differently. With the choices in color and material, I aim to surprise people by drawing their attention to the details. Ultimately, my goal is to increase the appreciation for everyday objects. When you drink from a cup or eat from a plate, I want you to be able to enjoy that moment more because of the objects you use.
