Featuring the photography of B.A. Van Sise
In a project that would span four years and take him across the country, B.A. Van Sise set out to document the lives of Holocaust survivors in the United States. Invited to Life: Holocaust Survivors in America features the photographic portraits that he created. Van Sise’s work offers fresh opportunities to engage with the unique stories of survivors who built new lives in the U.S. The photographs also reveal the wide diversity of American Jewish experience and the many ways in which individuals and communities have practiced resilience, remembrance, creativity, and connection.
B.A. Van Sise is an author and photographic artist focused on the intersection between language and the visual image. His work has been featured in solo exhibitions at the Center for Creative Photography and the Museum of Jewish Heritage – A Living Memorial to the Holocaust, as well as in group exhibitions at the Peabody Essex Museum, the Museum of Photographic Arts, the Los Angeles Center of Photography, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. A number of his portraits of American poets are in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery. Van Sise is an Independent Book Publisher Awards gold medalist, and his Invited to Life exhibition is a 2021 Prix de la Photographie Paris award-winner. Invited to Life, the book, is forthcoming in September 2022.
This presentation of Invited to Life is made possible by the Samuel D. Waksal Foundation, with the generous support of the David Berg Foundation and the Stefany and Simon Bergson Foundation. The exhibition is presented by the Center for Jewish History and jMUSE.
To ensure compliance with local health and safety guidelines, proof of full COVID-19 vaccination (at least 14 days after your final vaccine dose) with matching ID will be required for all visitors 12 and older. Starting January 29, 2022, children ages 5 to 11 must also show proof of full vaccination.
You can provide proof of vaccination by displaying it on your smartphone, by presenting a physical copy, or by using the New York State Excelsior Pass or NYC COVID Safe App (Android | iOS). Other acceptable forms of COVID-19 vaccination proof are the CDC Vaccination Card or NYC Vaccination Record.
If you received the vaccine outside the U.S., you must have an official immunization record that includes:
- First name and last name
- Date of birth
- Vaccine product name (only vaccines authorized by the WHO are acceptable)
- Date(s) administered
- Site where the vaccine was administered, or name of the person who administered it
Mask wearing is mandatory throughout the building. The Center for Jewish History reserves the right to ask for a negative COVID-19 test from all visitors regardless of vaccination status.
Occasionally, the Center may hold a special event during business hours. The event attendees are required to wear face masks indoors when not actively in engaged in eating and drinking.
Current exhibition hours are as followed:
Monday through Wednesday 10:00am to 4:00pm
Thursday 10:00am to 8:00pm
Friday 10:00am to 3:00pm
Sunday 11:00am to 5:00pm
The last entry for exhibitions on any given day is 30 minutes before closing.
