About this Event

Join us for the premier of a documentary which encapsulates life at The Cattle Market and an exhibition celebrating the long history of one of Nottingham’s best loved areas.

The Cattle Market has been a cornerstone of Nottingham since it was established in 1888. It welcomes thousands of local people each year, is home to the largest auction house in the UK and holds hundreds of years of history between its bull-head adorned gate posts.

The Cattle Market Project is a Heritage Lottery funded project which has spent the last eighteen months discovering and documenting the rich history of the Cattle Market area of Nottingham through a variety of creative and innovative ways.

As the project draws to a close, we are hosting a Celebration of The Cattle Market on 29th October to share all the work we’ve been doing.

We will be premiering the documentary film by Georgianna Scurfield. The film gives an insight into a week in the life of the Cattle Market during the hottest week the UK has ever seen.

Georgianna Scurfield is an award winning independent filmmaker from Nottingham. Her work has an unabashedly light, friendly and warm touch to it, which invites viewers into the world she’s documenting. She’s worked on a wide range of documentaries with a community focus which are at the core of her work.

We are also premiering three animated short films created by the wonderfully wacky and creative Sojo Animation using drawings from the talented children from Sneinton C of E Primary school.

The drawings were created in workshops led by Sophie Johnson in which the children listened to interviews of people talking about their experience at the market, and drew what they heard. The project is rooted in the idea of sharing lived experience and documenting it for future generations.

Alongside all this we will be holding an exhibition celebrating the history of The Cattle Market. This exhibition will showcase images and artefacts dug out of the Nottinghamshire archives by a local historian Chris Weir and features fresh work by local photographers Simon Benacki and Emily Damyan capturing present day life at The Cattle Market.

The event will start at 3.30 pm in Salesroom 6. We will be offering a range of refreshments, showcasing our exhibition, screening the films from 4.30 pm and aim to close the event at 6 pm.
