Celebrating the Music of Women: Sara Su Jones, Tatyana Stepanova, Dennis Moore

As part of the Monday Enrichment Series at the beautiful, historic Nineteenth Century Club in Oak Park, violinist Sara Su Jones and pianist Tatyana Stepanova, duo partners for the past 16 years, present an hourlong recital of exquisite and rarely heard works, primarily by women. This concert is inspired by and pays tribute to the first great American-born violinist, Maud Powell (1867-1920), an Illinois native who championed compositions by women and works by American composers throughout her illustrious international performing career.
The program will include works directly connected to Maud Powell: Amy Beach’s beautiful Romance, dedicated to Powell, and Poldini’s "Waltzing Doll," which Powell often performed. Sara Su and Tatyana will also perform the 3rd and 4th movements of the gorgeous and deeply moving—yet virtually unknown—Sonata for Violin and Piano by Marguerite Canal (1890-1978), the first French woman to conduct an orchestra (in 1917) and the second woman to win the prestigious Grand Prix de Rome composition prize (in 1920).
The program will also include the evocative "Midsummer Moon," by the pioneering British-American violist and composer Rebecca Clarke (1886-1979), and two contrasting short works by the composing prodigy once hailed as the "English Strauss": Dorothy Howell (1898-1982).
The fantastically fun, jitterbug-inspired (and rarely performed) "Hexapoda" by American composer and arranger Robert Russell Bennett, with movement titles like "Jane Shakes Her Hair" and "Jim Jives," will conclude the program.
Longtime WFMT host Dennis Moore, along with the performers, will share insights into the works on the program.
