Dr. Allerston is currently co-directing a major capital project to create a new suite of galleries for historic Scottish art at the Scottish National Gallery, the National Galleries of Scotland's flagship venue centrally situated in Edinburgh's World Heritage Site. 'Celebrating Scotland's Art': The Scottish National Gallery Project is scheduled for completion in summer 2023. Tricia is responsible for the conceptualization and layout of the new Scottish galleries. Her work on the project also includes curating three new displays ranging from the mid-16th century to the 1920s.
In this lecture, Dr. Allerston will introduce Scottish art by deploying the approach adopted in a forthcoming book on the subject. This book is based on 100 Scottish artworks in the NGS collection dating from about 1570-2020 and explores two key themes in Scottish art history: a keen interest in human nature and in color. The lecture will include a special focus on works on paper within the National Galleries of Scotland's collection, a great many of which dating from 1660-1945 have been researched and conserved in preparation for the new displays. It will also reference the new Scottish galleries and show how she and her curatorial team are approaching their display.
