Come celebrate the opening of our new exhibition, “Project Banaba,” with a special evening of tribute to Teresia Teaiwa on Friday, Nov. 3, 2023.As a distinguished Banaban, I-Kiribati and African American scholar, poet, and activist, Teresia Teaiwa has mentored and inspired countless Pacific Islanders and Native Hawaiians. Her work not only challenged our understanding of Pacific Island Studies, but reinvented the field.
Through poetry and storytelling, we kick off “Project Banaba” opening weekend with a tribute to Teresia’s ongoing legacy. We’ll have performances by BYUH I-Kiribati Dance Club, mele, poetry readings, and remarks from Katerina Teaiwa, and exhibition co-curators Healoha Johnston, Joy Enomoto, and Yuki Kihara.

“Project Banaba” commemorates the history of Banaba Island in the Pacific Ocean, which was destroyed by environmentally devastating phosphate mining during the 20th century. This led to the total relocation of its people in 1945. In “Project Banaba,” Banaban scholar and artist Katerina Teaiwa brings together rare historical archives and multimedia works that shed light on this little-known history, and its ongoing impact on Pacific communities.
