About this Event

Celebrating Pride Month: ALL ABOUT ALICE – The Films of the Gay Girls Riding Club

ALL ABOUT ALICE (1972, AGFA, 68 min. Dir. Ray Harrison).

Spearheaded by filmmaker Ray Harrison, the Gay Girls Riding Club (GGRC) took California’s 1960s underground gay scene by storm with drag spoofs of classic Hollywood films. Produced on less-than-shoestring budgets, these were truly fearless examples of DIY gay filmmaking: gloriously tawdry and trashy with a pre-John Waters / Divine sensibility that also managed to be loving homages to the mainstream melodramas (WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE? ALL ABOUT EVE) and spy films that they parodied. Screened in underground film circles and midnight movies gatherings for years, they eventually vanished from sight. AGFA, in partnership with the UCLA Film & TV Archive and Outfest Legacy Project, is thrilled to present this overlooked chapter of queer cinema -- preserved from the only known 16mm film elements in existence.

As a follow-up to our packed January screening of GGRC short films, we’re delighted to present ALL ABOUT ALICE, the GGRC’s spicy, feature-length roast – in color! – of ALL ABOUT EVE. Jarman Christopher pulls out all the stops (and then some) as Alice in this pioneering DIY movie, an essential snapshot of mid-century drag culture that would feel right at home with the dreamy work of Mike and George Kuchar. And dig that swinging early Seventies lounge-tastic theme song!! Restoration courtesy of the American Genre Film Archive, UCLA Film & TV Archive and The Outfest Legacy Project.

Note: ALL ABOUT ALICE is intended for adult audiences and features brief moments of onscreen nudity.
