When: 9th of November, 7pm
Where: Grove Auditorium, Magdalen College
The first Blue Lamp event of the term is here! Join us on 9th November at the Grove Auditorium in Magdalen College for a special screening of The Innermost Man ("Сокровенный человек"), a compelling film inspired by the life and works of Andrei Platonov — one of the most enigmatic and underappreciated Russian writers of the 20th century.
Platonov’s life story is one of profound contradictions and unwavering resilience. An ardent supporter of the revolution in his youth, he faced devastating personal losses, including the tragic death of his son, endured the hardships of war, and ultimately succumbed to a debilitating illness. His works, such as Chevengur and The Foundation Pit, stand as testaments to a man who, despite relentless trials, never lost his distinctive voice.
The film’s title references Platonov’s 1928 novel The Innermost Man, symbolising the essence of a person true to themselves, whose inner world remains untouched by the harsh realities of life. This film captures the spirit of a man who stayed sincere and steadfast amid the tumult of the Soviet era.
We are delighted to welcome the film’s director, @romaliberson , celebrated for his evocative and imaginative cinematic explorations of Russian literary figures. His unique storytelling style brings Platonov’s world to life, offering fresh perspectives on the writer's legacy.
As always, you can grab your tickets through the link in our bio or highlights. Members get discounts!
And to top it off, we’ll have a cozy get-together at the Magdalen College Bar after the event, where you can chat about the film with the director and other attendees.
We can't wait to see you there!
