About this Event

In celebration of Women’s History Month, join us at Source Booksellers for a panel discussion and book signing with book contributors, Tiffany Brown, Detroit Native and Executive Directorof NOMA, , Kimberly Dowdell, Detroit Native who is a friend of store and architect, leader, and advocate for the improvement of cities with Christian Joosse who is the editor, curator Letters to Ms. 1000: Words of Wisdom from African American Women Architects, Vol. 1. The compilation features stories and life lessons from Black women architects across the United States, of which there are fewer than 650 comprising only .4% of the profession.

About the Book:

Letters to Ms. 1000 paints an unapologetic depiction of Black women sculpting themselves from various walks of life to become one of only .04% in the profession. Exquisitely illustrated, by Black Illustrator and architect, Ochuko Evwaraye, each letter compels readers to share a role in elucidating the state of the profession and the universal aspirations for racial justice and social equity.

In partnership with minority owned retailers these words of wisdom to the aspirational “Ms. 1000” will generate a million-dollar impact fund toward career opportunity creation for U.S. Black women who account for fewer than 650 professionals in United States history.

If the current trajectory is maintained, "Ms. 1000" will become the 1000th Black woman architect licensed around the year 2040. Through acknowledgement of history and the value of Black culture in transforming communities, we can renew future generations.
