This year marks the centennial of the first bridge built to carry automobile traffic over the St. John's River. On July 1, 1921 the bridge opened to great fanfare and celebration.
San Marco Preservation Society and the Jacksonville Historical Society plan to mark the occasion during the last week of June with a multi-day celebration kicking off on June 24 with an illustrated presentation by local author and historian Dr. Wayne Wood.
Dr. Wood will speak about the importance of spanning the river for automobile traffic at this particular time in history as well as the journey that was taken to get the bridge built. The public is invited to attend his presentation, which will take place on Thursday, June 24, at 6:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall at Southside Baptist Church, located at 1435 Atlantic Blvd.
From June 24 to 26, keep an eye out for special lighting on the Acosta Bridge, thanks to the Jacksonville Transportation Authority! The Acosta will be lit in signature "Acosta blue" and yellow as a nod to the original bridge's former nickname, "Yellow Monster" (because of its yellow paint).
