Our Mission as a Community School
Alpha Community Academy was established as a community school, which, in Rwanda, means a parent-centered school. This embodies a way of thinking and acting that recognizes the historic central role of education in our communities, where we work hand in hand with the parents and local authorities towards a common goal of educating our children, as well as strengthening the families within the community.
Our Objectives as a Community School
Providing high quality and accessible education to the community – that is open to all children regardless of their family’s financial situation and background. We provide fully-funded scholarships to children in our community identified as coming from very poor and disadvantaged families. These scholarships cover all educational expenses, including tuition fees, transportation, uniforms, classroom materials... they also covers school meals, which are particularly important to children from very poor families, who are often suffering from malnutrition. We also offer partially-subsidised places to students from families who cannot afford full fees.
Strengthening the connection between our school and the surrounding communities by respecting the need of a quality education for all. Our school bridges the gap between the children from very poor families and those from middle-class families, allowing them to study side by side.
Developing our students’ personal skills, interests, strengths and increasing awareness on how these can be used to benefit their learning and helping them plan for their futures.
Enabling our teachers to work collaboratively with students, parents and community members, to make decisions about the way education works and what is taught in our school, for the future benefit and the economic growth of our community.
Encouraging active participation of students in their communities through games and other physical activities within the community, such as general cleaning of the streets and moral support to the vulnerable children from the poor families in their communities.
Fostering the continuation of local customs, traditions and practices through the school curriculum, with the help of the elders in our community, along with the parents themselves, in order to maintain unityand understanding amongst the people of our community.
Counteracting discrimination against marginalized groups and promoting their inclusion in the educational process. All children should have the opportunity for a quality education regardless of their family backgrounds or situations. At our school, everyone is welcome.
Working to promote a culture of teaching for change in the school and in the classroom, through the incorporation of democratic systems and interactive pedagogy.
Giving voice to teachers so they can participate meaningfully in educational reform and improve the general well-being of the children in our community.
How our community school benefits our community
Teachers at our school have a greater capacity to tailor learning to each child. Teachers actively collaborate on the best teaching practices and learning environments that work best for each child. Our teachers understand the strengths, challenges and motivation of every individual child. As a community school we have a deep understanding of our community and how it’s children learn best.
The Student-Parent-Teacher relationship is enhanced, engaged, and more effective at a community school, such as ours.
Our school fosters belonging, leadership, and social-emotional skills through increased student engagement. The sign of a great school community is an active partnership amongst the students, parents and educators. Such combined efforts can offer children a wonderful platform from which to begin their learning journey in their community.
There are fantastic benefits for parents and caregivers being involved in a community school. Through the ups and downs of life and the challenges of parenthood, the welcoming friendships and shared support network at Alpha provides strength and support to all of our student’s parents. Our school values diversity, equality and inclusiveness of all parents in our community whatever their circumstances.
It’s a safe place for the children to come. When the children are in a familiar environment they feel safe, and they are at their best. They learn better, they are more creative and they interact better socially with others.
At our school children are engaged in authentic learning experiences that increase their understanding of our community and businesses within our community, as well as local needs and issues.

Community Partnerships
Community Partnerships create ways for schools to collaborate with families, community members and local businesses in support of education.
They provide enriched learning opportunities for students and teachers and foster new ways of thinking about their practices, as they become more aware of community services, resources, and opportunities.
Community Partners can give back to their community by supporting education and students, through subsidising school fees, and donations to support children from poor and disadvantaged families.
They provide an exciting opportunity for employers from the community to mentor children to enhance their learning, and share an understanding of their surroundings, potential pathways, opportunities, and skills necessary for their field.
Parents can directly contribute to shaping future leaders. Their pride in our community school fuels their commitment to develop and support opportunites for their children.
If your business would like to be a Community Partner of Alpha Community School, please contact us at [email protected] or call our Principal, Winnie Muvunyi, on 0788 463 497.
