We are offering free admission for visitors to celebrate the history of the Rockford region on 815 Day! From 10am to 4pm on Friday, August 15 the museum will host the local community, with free self-guided tours in the Historic Village and exhibits in the Main Museum Center.
Festivities will include expert tours of the Heritage Gardens at 10am, Noon, and 2pm led by Heritage Gardens Manager Katie Townsend. She brings over 35 years as a naturalist and leads a team of 25+ dedicated garden volunteers.
815 Day visitors will learn about life between 1890-1910 by engaging with costumed History Interpreters in the Historic Village. A variety of different people, technologies, lifestyles and cultures will be on display. Visitors will discover how life in the Rockford region has changed over the last 125+ years, and also how life has stayed the same.
Inside the Museum Center, visitors will explore Rockford’s history through interactive exhibits in over 20,000 square feet of gallery space.
Highlights include: You’re in the Army Now: Camp Grant, Rockford’s Legacy, our new permanent exhibit telling the story of Rockford’s Camp Grant, where over 300,000 soldiers trained for both World Wars; Many Faces, One Community, an exhibit featuring stories of Rockford’s immigrants from 1834 to the present; The Girls of Summer, exploring the famous Rockford Peaches of the AAGPL and the storied ladies who played hardball in the 1940s-50s; and The Missing Link: Socks, Monkeys and Rockford’s Industrial Past
where visitors will learn about the red heel socks that earned Rockford the title of “Home of the Sock Monkey.”
Additionally, 815 Day visitors will be treated to a free coupon for a "Concrete Mixer" with two mix-ins at local Culver’s restaurants.
