TACET
```\\ Twice I have been at a show with Tacet on the bill. The first instance was Demo Spot; a print media store which offers books and zines and cinephile compendiums and on occasion activates its gallery space for performance. I’ve heard this room was once utilized for the shop organizer’s uncle’s ping pong matches. This a rumor, which I hold in contrast to the varied events they have hosted over the last months. The chameleon an empty room may be.
The lights cut when Tacet manned their instruments, in moments our eyes adjusted to their dimly visible trifecta; half cast in a cool ray entering through the old panes window from the floodlight of the parking lot. This stark baseline grew, wantonly activated as they each became absorbed in their own expressions with guitar or drum kit or microphone. Playing simultaneously but disparate, seemingly uncaring of the other’s participation, like three waltzing pairs revolving around each other in time on a floor; in unison but independent.
Taylor Kohl was sat bent over his guitar aside an amp, the speaker as a mirror, like Narcissus at the lake. Patrick Shelley in the center, body as a cross with perfect posture and his movements casting invisible tentacles cupping the audience, a master Oankali. Andy Richardson to the right, at once the most lighted by the window and shrouded by shadow, depending on his turns and writhes. And he writhed, like in viscous air, slow and guttural as match to his vocalizations. There was a cast on the audience, each of the men a vortex pulling attention , their own fixation empathic to those watching.
The next time I was to see Tacet, they stunted. It was a house show on V St, you know the one. When their set was to begin, Daniel Trudeau plugged a mic into a mac book and pressed play on a youtube video. It was Tacet, in their same formation, in a living room. Taylor on the left, Pat centered shirtless in front of a fire place, and Andy right on sofa. Same as in Demo Spot, each utterly absorbed in their instrument. Andy rapt in physical unrest, somersaulting and head standing over the sofa, again with a window to his shoulder.
It was a bit, for sure, to have been physically in attendance at a show, to exit right before playing. This premeditated wool pulling drew the audience in though. Literally, to see the small computer screen. And philosophically, Zach Willis in the audience was full of enthusiasm “yeah I’m gonna watch Tacet on the laptop!” he declared. We could have been pissed, but instead selected to be impressed by the balls. \\ c.s.
