About this Event
This event is part of a series of NYC H2O walks led by artist, photographer, and journalist Nathan Kensinger, exploring Staten Island's historic waterfront neighborhoods. This walk will explore the changing coastlines of three interconnected neighborhoods – Cedar Grove Beach, New Dorp Beach, and Oakwood Beach. Once known for their summertime bungalow communities, the waterfronts of these neighborhoods have undergone significant changes in recent decades. In New Dorp Beach, we will look for remnants of the waterfront bungalows that were demolished decades ago, for a planned highway that was never built. In Cedar Grove Beach, we will explore the footprint of a century-old bungalow colony that once stood here, and which was largely demolished by the city by 2012, before Hurricane Sandy flooded the area. And in Oakwood Beach, we will walk along the temporary coastal barrier erected in the aftermath of Sandy, which may soon be replaced by a 5-mile-long seawall stretching along the coast of Staten Island.
This walk is a loop, and approximately 2.5 miles in total. Sturdy shoes are recommended for this walk, which will involve walking on sand and following dirt roads over uneven ground. This walk will be entirely outdoors.
