About this Event

Join Professor Cecil Gutzmore for a compelling lecture on author Jane Austen and the place of slavery in her novel Mansfield Park.

Jane Austen (1775-1817) is a valid icon of British literary culture. A novelist of undoubtedly massive aesthetic achievement. Her portrait appears on a Pound Sterling banknote – then one of only three women with that state honour. She is also on a stamp. Austen’s reputation quickly reached certain social heights: the then Prince Regent and Sir Walter Scott were early admirers. A scholarly book is titled How Jane Austen Conquered the World. British colonial education was one enabler of her ‘world conquest’. The likes of this Afrikan-Jamaican fell under Jane’s beguiling spell during schooling in 1950s late colonial Jamaica. However, loving Jane Austen, was/is not quite “Jane Austen: No Problem!”
