Topic: Will AI Change the Way the Next Generation Thinks?
Learning technologies have long shaped the nature of teaching and defined what we consider a classroom. Over time, the evolution of digital tools and techniques has transformed the spaces where learning occurs. The emergence of the internet introduced virtual classrooms—accessible everywhere, at any time, and to anyone—dismantling traditional boundaries. Educational technologies have fundamentally changed how knowledge is created, distributed, and owned, making them a truly disruptive force. Today, artificial intelligence (AI) stands as the next major disruption, with the potential to redefine the very concept of learning.
Imagining the Classroom of the Future
What might teaching and learning look, feel, and be like for our grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and generations beyond? What changes in today’s classrooms offer glimpses of that future? Early in the era of internet-based learning, Wood and Smith predicted that the web had “the potential to alter human interactions without the need for physical presence” (p. 5). Artificial intelligence now extends that possibility by enabling human-like interactions and reshaping how learners think and learn—both today and in the years ahead.
A Call to Action
As we imagine the future, we must ask: What vision of education do we want for ourselves and for the generations to come? The choices we make today will shape not only the tools we use but the values and goals that define the idea of education for decades ahead.
About the Speaker: David Stein, Ph.D.
Emeritus Professor, The Ohio State University
Dr. David Stein earned his doctoral degree in Adult Education from the University of Michigan and currently serves as an Emeritus Professorspecializing in digital (electronic) teaching and learning in online environments.
He has conducted numerous workshops on principles of electronic t teaching and with professional associations and universities on electronic and distance learning strategies. His dedication to excellence in online teaching and research has been recognized through multiple honors, including:
- Best Practice Award in Distance Learning/Technology for Adult Learners
- Imogene Oakes Award for Outstanding Research in Adult Education (with Constance Wanstreet)
- Shauna Schullo Best Distance Teaching Practices Award (with Constance Wanstreet)
- Research Paper Award, National University Technology Network (with Constance Wanstreet)
Dr. Stein’s research focuses on how learners use the internet to develop academic and workforce skills. He has presented extensively at national and regional conferences and authored numerous publications on adult learning in technologically supported environments. His expertise has led to visiting professorships at leading institutions worldwide, including:
- Central China Normal University (China)
- Universitas Negeri Padang / State University of Padang (Indonesia)
In these roles, he collaborated on research and program development in digital learning and lifelong education.
Currently, Dr. Stein is investigating how artificial intelligence (AI) will transform teaching and learning by enabling personalized instruction, adaptive feedback, and intelligent tutoring systems that respond to individual learner’s needs. His work examines how AI-driven analytics can:
- Identify skill gaps
- Support competency-based education
- Create inclusive learning environments for diverse adult populations
By integrating AI into online and hybrid classrooms, Dr. Stein aims to redefine lifelong learning models and prepare educators for a future where technology and human teaching expertise work hand-in-hand. Through these initiatives, he continues to shape global conversations on innovation in education.
