Chris Corstens by now has a few solid hits on his name. With the pieces Treiffel and Junglebumps he burned down the house of Amsterdams wildest nightlife parties. The tender Drie Vliertjes charmed the attentive ear. Bootlegs celebrates the outdoor summer as Fluxt takes us on a trip to Ethiopia. And Chris just keeps writing new pieces. All these compositions are built on strong expressive melodies and are all a perfect fit for his quartet with pianist Oscar Jan Hoogland, cellist Harald Austbø and drummer Marcos Baggiani.
Corstens, Hoogland, Austbø and Baggiani met each other first in Misha Mengelberg's now legendary Noise Class. So, it should come as no surprise that the quartet does not pay too much attention at drawing neatly between the lines of jazz history, but instead happily sets out new lines on a forward moving creative journey. As Chris' saxophone dances over the bass lines of Harald's five-string cello, Baggiani and Hoogland stoke the fire from underneath with driving groove and virtuoso raw piano playing.
