Galleria Eugenia Delfini inaugura la sua terza stagione espositiva presentando Catherine Biocca, una artista visiva che negli ultimi quindici anni ha lavorato ed insegnato nel nord Europa e da poco è rientrata a Roma, sua città natale.
Nel suo lavoro Biocca concepisce l'arte come uno strumento per ricercare il lato assurdo (e tuttavia tremendamente divertente) della vita, per farlo spazia dai disegni realizzati con schiuma poliuretanica colorata su tela alle animazioni video, dalle installazioni in alluminio e silicone ai lavori audio. Solitamente il risultato è un mix di diversi media, immagini e dimensioni che riversano lo spettatore in un ambiente da attraversare. Queste immagini appartengono al nostro universo culturale, provengono dai cartoni animati, dalla pubblicità, dalla fantascienza, o semplicemente da internet per cui hanno come fine quello di farci esperire la realtà da una prospettiva diversa.
"ugly woman scratching her head" è la prima mostra personale di Biocca in galleria. Il titolo, che fa riferimento al momento in cui si è sovrappensiero, è stato recuperato dall’artista dal web ed è la dicitura con cui un utente qualunque ha salvato un video di una donna che si gratta pensierosa la testa. In mostra Biocca presenta un'installazione realizzata appositamente per la galleria sulle questioni che attanagliano la comunicazione verbale e non. Il progetto è composto da un'installazione video a tre canali i cui soggetti (una donna e un cane) sono anche presenti in forma fisica nello spazio. Il dialogo ambiguo, e poco chiaro tra i due, trasporta il pubblico in una serie di fraintendimenti ed equivoci generando nuove situazioni e modi di comunicare. A parete infine, anche alcuni lavori su tela e carta che rappresentano rielaborazioni di antichi vasi antropomorfi.

Laureata in Scienze Politiche nel 2006 alla Luiss Roma, ha studiato all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Dusseldorf, dove ha ottenuto il suo BA e MA nel 2010 e 2013. Tra il 2014 e il 2015 è stata artist in residence alla Rijksakademie Van Beeldende Kunsten di Amsterdam. Attualmente, Biocca è assistant professor of Studio Art alla JCU di Roma e guest lecturer alla Udk di Berlino.
Il suo lavoro è stato esposto in diverse mostre nazionali e internazionali, come la Biennale degli Urali del 2017; la Biennale di Animazione di Shenzhen del 2016; Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, Berlino; Kunstverein di Norimberga; LOK - Kunstmuseum St Gallen; la Stigter van Doesburg Gallery, Amsterdam; Longtermhandstand, Budapest; la Polansky Gallery, Praga; San Francisco Convent, Havana; Linseed Project, Shanghai; Miami New Media Festival; Light Industries, New York; Cabinet & Studiolo, Milano; la Fondazione Volume! e l’Accademia di San Luca, Roma.
In Europa Biocca è rappresentata anche dalle gallerie greengrassi di Londra e la PSM di Berlino e negli ultimi anni ha ricevuto diversi riconoscimenti e premi, tra i quali l’Ala Fort Art Prize 2024, la borsa di ricerca Stiftung Kunstfonds, lo stipendio del Berliner Senat, la scholarship ROSE del Mambo di Bologna, il Mondrian Fonds dai Paesi Bassi e il Premio internazionale Strabag a Vienna.

Galleria Eugenia Delfini opens its third exhibition season by presenting Catherine Biocca, a visual artist who has worked and taught in Northern Europe for the last fifteen years and recently returned to Rome, her hometown.
In her work Biocca understands art as a tool to reveal the emptiness and nonsense (and yet tremendously funny) of life, to do so she ranges from drawings made with colored air foam on canvas to video animations, from aluminum and silicone installations to audio works. Usually the result is a mix of different media, images and dimensions that pour the viewer into an environment to be crossed. However, these images belong to our cultural universe, they come from cartoons, advertising, science fiction, or simply from the internet so their aim is to make us experience reality from a different perspective.
"ugly woman scratching her head" is Biocca's first solo exhibition at the gallery. The title, which refers to the moment in which a person is lost in thought, was recovered by the artist from the web, and is a sentence chosen by a random user to save an image of a woman thoughtfully scratching her head.
In the exhibition Biocca presents an installation created specifically for the gallery on the issues that affect verbal and non-verbal communication. The project consists of a three-channel video installation whose subjects (a woman and a dog) are also physically present in the space. The ambiguous and unclear dialogue between the two transports the audience into a series of misunderstandings and misbeliefs, generating new situations and ways of communicating. Finally, on the wall, there are also some works on canvas and paper that refer to ancient anthropomorphic vases.
Catherine Biocca (1984, Rome) lives and works in Rome.
She earned her B.A. in Political Science from LUISS University, Rome, in 2006, and she studied fine arts at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, where she obtained her B.A. in 2010 and M.A. in 2013. In 2014-2015 she was an artist in residence at the Postgraduate program Rijksakademie van beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. Currently, Biocca is assistant professor of Studio Art at JCU and guest lecturer at the Udk of Berlin.
Her work was showcased in several national and international shows, such as the 2016 Animation Biennial Shenzhen; the 2017 Ural Biennial; Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, Berlin; Kunstverein Nürnberg; LOK - Kunstmuseum St Gallen; Stigter van Doesburg Gallery, Amsterdam; Longtermhandstand, Budapest; Polansky Gallery, Prague; San Francisco Convent, Havana; Linseed Project, Shanghai; Miami New Media Festival; Light Industries, New York; Cabinet & Studiolo, Milan; Fondazione Volume! and Accademia di San Luca, Rome.
In Europe, Biocca is also represented by the greengrassi in London and PSM in Berlin, and in recent years has received several awards and prizes, including the Ala Fort Art Prize 2024, Stiftung Kunstfonds research grant, the Berliner Senat Stipend, the ROSE scholarship from Mambo in Bologna, the Mondrian Fonds from the Netherlands and the Strabag International Prize in Vienna.
