Programme:Schumann Piano Quintet
Brahms Piano Quintet
Philosopher-pianist Jeremy Denk and the Casals Quartet show that epic emotions can come in small packages, playing the piano quintets of Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms.
To Schumann, Brahms was a messenger from the musical future: an artist with the imagination and creative power of a young god. To Brahms, Schumann was hero, mentor and a beacon of hope. In their piano quintets, both wore their hearts unashamedly on their sleeves. But they were very different men, and where Schumann’s Quintet surges with uninhibited song, Brahms tells a tale of tragedy on an almost symphonic scale.
Jeremy Denk understands both artists intimately, and hearing him perform with this award-winning Spanish string quartet should be a revelatory as well as deeply moving experience. ‘When the concert is perfect, does that make the reviewer redundant?’ asked critic Frances Wilson after Denk performed at Milton Court. But come and hear for yourself.
