Did you know the streets of Cary are named for people and places that feature prominently in the history of the town? Discover more about Cary’s history through housing developments and streets named for prominent African American Citizens.
Vermel Stewart, a woman with multiracial roots, including Native American, was the daughter of Roann Artelia (Telia) Evans and Albert Patrick Stewart. Albert's father and Vermel's grandfather was Thomas Stewart, one of the early settlers of the Friendship community in Apex in the 1800s.
Vermel Stewart married Clyde Evans Sr. of Cary and was the major force behind the purchase of 100 acres of land in 1939 along what would later become Evans Road in Cary, named in their honor. Clyde Sr. himself was a descendant of free people of color.
Vermel and Clyde's descendants developed several neighborhoods in Cary, including Evans Estates, Dutchess Village, Bailey Creek, Bailey Park, and Bailey Grove. Two of the streets in those developments are named for their grandmother (Vermel Court in Dutchess Village) and great grandmother (Telia Pointe in Evans Estates).
Learn more about Cary's early people of color through street names revealing their history at a special presentation by the Friends of the Page-Walker Hotel. "Cary History from the Streets: Cary's African American History" will give you a “secret knowledge” of Cary’s past as told through our green and white street signs around town! Presenters: Carla Michaels and Barbara Wetmore.
